Dealing With Your Need For Medication For Depression

Author: Justin Meyer

So the decision has been made that you need anti-depressants. This can be taken as either good or bad. Some people choose to see it as the first step to getting better. However, others view it as a sign that they are crazy.

If you are in the first group, don't dismiss this article, as your opinions may change later. But if you are in the second group, let me first stress something: You are not crazy. The medication is helping you by correcting your brain chemistry. It is keeping you from more advanced symptoms, and should be viewed as a good thing.

It is easy to find that medication is tying you down, to start resenting your pills. Having to take them daily, sometimes twice a day can become burdensome. You may feel that they are limiting your life, as you are not supposed to drink alcohol while taking the pills. These are natural feelings. What is important is to not stop taking them.

To deal with your feelings, it is best to first acknowledge them. If you only let them fester, then you will never really address them. So by bringing them out into the open, you can deal with them. Try talking about these feelings with a good friend or your therapist. Write them down. It may not help you to get over the feelings, but it will be a start. In time, you will become accustomed to them, and you will feel better about the medication.
