Lunesta - Can I Become Dependent On The Lunesta Sleeping Aid?

Author: Ian Mason

Generally Lunesta is used in treating sleep related problems like insomnia. In this method of treatment, patient is treated with tablets containing Lunesta. Constituents of Lunesta acts on the chemicals present in brain which is considered to be a cause of sleeplessness. In other words, Lunesta acts by relaxing brain muscles and inducing sleep.

Generally sleeping medicines have property of addiction. However, trials conducted in clinics do not prove this property in case of Lunesta. Still, it is better to be cautious. We cannot rule out the possibility of addictive substances in Lunesta. This property is common amongst sleeping medicines and sedatives.

Medical practitioners prescribe Lunesta after considering all aspects like whether you are already taking any medicine of that drug group, for how long you have been taking such medicines, is there any possibility of interaction with constituents of other medicines you are taking with the Lunesta?, etc. Your doctor will guide you better about precautions you should take while using Lunesta.

Major Side Effects of Lunesta

Despite the precautions, you may experience some physical as well as behavioral changes. Such changes may be side effects of Lunesta. Some of the major side effects of Lunesta are:

Unconsciousness
Drowsiness
Dizziness
Confusion or difficulty in coordination
Behavioral changes
Memory problem and
Dependence

Usually, sleeping medicines have tendency of making the patient dependent on that particular drug. However, studies carried out on Lunesta do not ratify this phenomenon.

Lunesta has been approved by FDA for prolonged use like one or two weeks in continuation. However, possibility of Lunesta bearing some of the same effects which other sleeping medicines have can not be ignored.

You may develop dependence for Lunesta if you are using the medicine for longer times. This is a common aspect of sleeping medicines line Sonata, Ambien and other such medicines. With prolonged use of sleeping medicines your body becomes habitual to these medicines. You may not get proper sleep after stopping usage of Lunesta. This is more so, when you stop the medicine all of a sudden. To avoid such condition, you must not stop the usage of Lunesta and gradually reduce the intake in consultation with your physician. As a result of sudden withdrawal, you may get some symptoms like sleeplessness. In simple words, dependence is nothing but your bodys urge to a particular medicine for which it has become habitual. If you are habitual of any thing, not only medicine, it is difficult to give it up suddenly. Same is applicable to Lunesta dependency.

Conclusion

Usually Lunesta is not a known addictive substance. However, to be on a safer side, always consult your doctor before starting and stopping use of Lunesta.

Important Note

These guidelines are meant to give you basic information about Lunesta. Your doctor will advise you the right way of using Lunesta. Doctor is competent enough to decide how much dose and for how much duration you should take Lunesta.
